The Symbiosis Law Entrance Test (SLAT)

is conducted for admission into the Symbiosis Law Schools on Pune, Noida and Hyderabad.  The admission procedure consists of two steps – first the SLAT, which is followed by a Personal Interview and a Writing Aptitude Test (PI WAT).

SLAT

SLAT consists of 150 questions distributed across five sections as follows:

There is no negative marking, so one can attempt all questions, even if unsure of the answer.

English

The English section is aimed at testing one’s proficiency in comprehension and grammar. Building of a good vocabulary cannot happen overnight, it is a gradual process which is facilitated by regular reading of newspapers and magazines (this will also help in the GK section). Ensure that you learn the meanings and usage of all new words you encounter. It is also important to brush up the basics of grammar in order to tackle error-detection and sentence-correction questions.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs

It is one of the easiest scoring areas if you have been diligent all year, as it is the quickest section to solve. You either know the answer, or you do not. Newspaper reading will go a long way towards helping you ace this section.

Analytical and Logical Reasoning

These are often one of the most scoring sections, with sufficient practice. The questions are usually based on Puzzles, Seating Arrangement, Logical Sequences, Number Test, Verbal Reasoning, Family/ Blood Relation, Ranking & Order, Coding Decoding and the like. With sufficient practice, this section is one that you can safely rely on for marks.

Legal Aptitude

The primary issue here will be speed, but that can be overcome by solving sufficient questions before hand. Another potential issue is that some Principle-Fact based questions might prove to be tricky, so practice is the key to ensure that they do not trip you up.

The legal facts and GK based questions can be attempted by memorising certain important facts and dates, and by keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in the legal world, like judgements, amendments, etc

PI WAT

Students who qualify the SLAT will be eligible to take the PI WAT, which will usually be 7 – 10 days after SLAT.

Preparation Tips for the Written Ability Test (WAT)

The WAT will usually only require basic essay writing on a given topic. The topics will be generic but thought provoking in nature. Keeping in touch with the latest news will prove helpful. Students should also make sure to improve your grammatical skills and spellings.

Preparation for the Personal Interview (PI)

• The Personal interview will roughly last 5-7 minutes. Students will be called into the room individually.
• It is advisable to not make up answers; admit if you are unaware of an answer. Be prepared with good answers for generic questions like “Why did you choose Law?”.
• Keeping a cool head and a calm mind will take you a long way. The interviewer may try to put you in a situation where one might lose patience, but that is what you are going to be judged upon and doing so might hamper your choices.
• Appearing confident will always create a good impression.
