Why should I write the CLAT exam
In this hugely competitive world, where new careers promising lucrative lifestyle and professional dignity mark a student’s future, the choice to opt for the right career is often challenging. This article aims to provide an understanding as to why writing the CLAT exam, is a primary step to pave one’s career path.
WHAT IS THE CAREER THROUGH CLAT EXAM?
The CLAT is an All India entrance exam, that is conducted annually to test the aptitude of aspiring lawyers to get into national law schools. Common-Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralized test for admission to 22 National Law Universities in India. 43 other education institutes and two public sector institutes are also eligible to use these scores. The test is conducted by the 22 participating law schools in rotation, in the order of their establishment, starting with National Law School of India University which conducted CLAT-2008, and up to the National University of Advanced Legal Studies conducted CLAT-2020. It opens doors to enter the world of legal scholarship and secure an undergraduate integrated degree in law and either in arts , science, or management. The score that needs to be secured in the test is proportional to the order of position of the respective NLU amongst the 19 national law schools. The national law school of India University, Bangalore is the most preferred NLU, and the toppers of the test, are qualified for this college.
SCOPE OF CLAT IN FUTURE
Tracking the trajectory of the scope of the CLAT test, right from its inception, to the present and extrapolating it to the future (let’s say the next 10-15 years), it is evident that the popularity of the test is on a boom. As the opportunities of building a career in corporate law gain momentum in India, the national law schools provide a stable platform to take off to such a career path. Since the law as a profession, especially corporate law, is becoming increasingly popular the career possibilities that CLAT extends to the future are also going to accelerate. In fact, the current Indian legal scenario is such that it’s the perfect time to consider cracking the CLAT test to get into one of the top law schools thus cementing a stable future laced with the promise of an attractive salary.
LIFE AT NLU:
The life at national law school abounds with both academic passion and the cool fun masti of college life. Ranging from enriched classroom discussions, highly focussed academic structure to fun cultural fests, debate contests, etc. NLUs are constantly bustling with life and josh. It opens doors to the litigation realm through mooting competitions and arbitration sessions. Frequent seminars organized by corporate firms and talks delivered by dignitaries promise an enriching university life.
PLACEMENTS AT NLU
The placements offered by NLUS differ from one law school to another and also varies with the individual capacity of students. The top 5 law schools boast of 100% placements but the placements in the lower NLUS depend huge on individual performance both academically and excellence in endeavors like publishing research papers, mooting, etc. The average packages of Tier 1 law firms in India for freshers would range between 12–18 Lakhs p.a. Tier 1 law firms usually absorb students from higher NLUS. The average package of Tier 2 law firms in India for freshers would range between 7–14 Lakhs. Top firms like Luthra and Luthra, Amarchand and Mangaldas, etc. target NLUS for selecting their recruits.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NLUS AND OTHER LAW SCHOOLS
The NLUs themselves can be categorized into multiple tiers. The top tier NLUs promise assured placements and premiere legal education. It also helps one access mooting, ADR, debating, etc. on a professional level. The NLUS in Tier 3 and below also provide the scope for the same, but it relies hugely on individual potential.
Though there are private law colleges like Symbiosis, Jindal University, etc, providing quality education, the tag of an NLU imparts a different level of dignity and career possibilities. The entry to NLUs is solely determined by Merit, thus ensuring the quality of the peer group. Therefore given the choice between an NLU and any other college it is always advantageous to choose the former, especially if it’s a top tier NLU.
