What is a National Law University (NLU)?

In order to impart quality legal education the government of India has set up numerous national law schools( abbreviated as NLUSs) across the country, the first of which was established in Bangalore in the year 1987.They were set up in furtherance of the objectives proposed by second generation reforms laid down by the Bar council of India. The national law schools are distinct from other legal schools in multiple regards like the autonomous status held by the law schools, the five year integrated courses offered, provision for intensive legal education coupled with involvement of legal luminaries and more importantly the exposure of students to a nationwide cross section.

Following the inception of NLSIU Bangalore 19 other law schools were established in various other states of the country. Presently securing legal education from a high ranked NLU can be regarded as one of the most attractive ways to cement one’s future both academically and professionally,

HOW NLUS ARE FORMED?

During the 80s the Bar Council of India felt the requirement to bring about a revolutionary change in the legal education of the country and thus was born the idea of setting up autonomous law universities known as the national law universities or NLUs. These institutes were conceptualised to transform law as a professional course and introduce five year integrated courses to Indian legal education.

The first national law school was established in Bangalore in the year 1987.At present there are a total of 20 NLUs which offer the 5 year integrated courses out of which all except NLU Delhi determine their admission through the CLAT entrance.
