Cracking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) would be the main aim for all of you, and understandably so, as it is the entrance exam for the most prestigious Law schools in our country. However, there are other exams as well that if you do well in, would result in very successful careers for you in future. Some of them are SLAT, AILET, LSAT etc.
The most interesting or rather, unique section of most Law Entrance exams is the Legal Aptitude/Reasoning section. This section tests you on your aptitude or skill in being able to assess a situation by comprehending the problem and having the ability to evaluate and take a stance or position.
Legal Knowledge is mostly what an educated Indian citizen is expected to know about the law in India and other parts of the world. This section focuses more on the latest happenings in the world as well as our political system and constitution. Our advice to students is to be familiar with the legal structure in India and other countries, as well as build a good knowledge of the Indian political system and the Constitution.
Legal Reasoning is the ability to assess a factual situation based on a given principle of law. One need not know anything more than what is given in the principle (or passage). Familiarity with the principle only helps or hastens the process of applying it. To draw an analogy with your favorite sport, I am sure you would know all the rules of the game prior to the start of the game. However, the rules are normally re-inforced at the start of the game by the empire/referee. Prior knowledge of the rules helps you relax when the rules are re-inforced without the pressure of trying to understand them. In the same way, prior knowledge of the concepts behind the principles helps you understand the rules faster and with less effort, so that you can apply them to the situation more appropriately. However, do remember that you need to only apply what is given in the principle (or passage), even if you know something extra or you find it contradicts with what you already know.
